96 ford contour?

Does this 2.0 engine have the 4 spd trans with a torq lock up for o/d? Goes into overdrive sometimes but, have to step on gas, downshifts on expressway like ping. Sticks there at times and the o/d off light begins to flash. When that occors, i can;t get it back in. I have to feather the gas and kindof punch it a bit then let off to get to go back in when that light don;t come on flashing. Anyone have this issue? Can that light flashing mean other things?
