Everything about pet rats?

Can any rat experts tell me about domesticated rats as pets? What I need to know for housing, what their preferred food is, any health problems, behavioral quirks...pretty much anything someone who wants to own a pet rat should know. Also, would a habitat (formerly used for dwarf hamsters, but pretty big!) with gl walls be okay? Thanks!
