What the friggin hell did Obama mean when he said "I'm the only thing between you and the pitchforks."?

He's not above (actually enjoys it, I imagine) using the presidential 'bully pulpit' power to force his will on the 'evil empire' of the banks. The constant attacks by the narcissist in chief against this kind of power will backfire on him, as in 'biting the hand that feeds you' kind of thing.
