Why was the construction of monuments so important for the Pharaohs in Ancient Egypt?

To leave a legacy for themselves, to remind people of their presence (especially important, when you couldn't adress people by radio or TV), to employ the fellahs (farmers) in times when they couldn't farm, and to give people a reason to celebrate in the construction of monuments.
