Any suggestions on childproofing a pool?

Anyone have experience with childproofing a pool? We are looking at door alarms and pool fencing but wanted to know what has worked for others. I have seen the black mesh fencing around pools but it seems that it is not real strudy. It also looks like it could easily be removed by a child. Also, what door alarms have worked well for your family? I looked at Leslies Pool Supply but the alarms they sell have a 7 second delay before they chime and they can not be turned off. There have been two child drownings on the news lately and it has really opened our eyes.
